IRON MOUNTAIN – The Iron Mountain-Kingsford GFWC Women’s Club celebrates along with other women’s clubs across America the 125th anniversary of this longstanding volunteer organization on April 25. The local club also celebrates its 100th year anniversary as a General Federated Club.
GFWC Iron Mountain-Kingsford, club president, Germaine Edwards, first vice president, Germaine Tehako and treasurer, Louise Swope, recently attended the GFWC Michigan State Convention in Grand Rapids.
The local club received the Upper Peninsula District 5 Distinction as the Club of the Year and placed first for the state award for the GFWC Signature Project – Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention, which local club member Terry Sovey served as state chairman. Fifteen other state awards were also earned by the local club.

The GFWC Women’s Clubs are the only Women’s Volunteer Service Clubs which are recognized by the United State Congress for the work they do in their local communities.
The Women’s Club of Iron Mountain-Kingsford would like to acknowledge all of the local community members and the local businesses who so generously support the local club in its efforts to make this community better.
“GFWC members are proactive, determined, visionary volunteers with a national voice and a local passion,” said a spokesperson.

At the Michigan State Convention two graduating seniors from Iron Mountain High School were awarded $500 scholarships. Hallie Balcerzak received the GFWC Michigan Nursing Scholarship and Mahkayla Kramer receive the GFWC Michigan Arts Scholarship.
GFWC Iron Mountain-Kingsford has as a major focus the promotion of education for local women. The local club provides three scholarships yearly to qualifying women to attend Bay College and other universities
